Fisherwomen are among the most hardworking - Fisherwomen from the coastal village in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) deserve a special mention on International Women’s Day !!

While 99 per cent of the 1.6 million fisherwomen in India are engaged in fish processing and marketing, these fisherwomen in Thoothukudi brave the sea and do fishing on their own. Fisherwomen from Swami Vivekananda Nagar near Threspuram fishing hamlet have been fishing for past many years and can be spotted between 12 am and 5 am, when most others are sound asleep.“Usually we go for fishing after our children fall asleep and we hope to return before they wake up”, Meenatchiammal, a fisherwoman said.

About 32 sqkm of the reef was totally degraded due to activities such as mining, destructive and unsustainable fishing practices, pollution and coastal development. -JK Patterson Edward, director ,Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI)..noticed a slow recovery of the coral cover in the Gulf of Mannar!!
