Tuticorin is one of the Port city in south India about 540 kms south west of Madras(Chennai). Located in the Gulf of Mannar with Sri Lanka on the South East and the large land mass of India on the West.The major harbour of  Tuticorin is  well known as pearl diving and fishing centre

LightHouse

 

The LightHouse built in 1842 marked the beginning of the history of Tuticorin harbour Development.
List Mark Tuti Port  On 11th July 1974,the newly constructed Tuticorin port was declared as the 10th Indian major port.
   
 

Independence and After:

Tuticorin became the citadel of the freedom struggle in the early 20th Century.In 1906, the great freedom fighter of India, V.O.Chidambaram Pillai launched the first Swadeshi ship "S.S. Gaelia" in British India.The post independence era in India witnessed planned and rapid economic development in all spheres.Then the minor port of Tuticorin had a flourishing trade handling a variety of cargoes meant for the neighbouring countries of Sri Lanka, Maldives etc., and the coastal regions of India.

 


The district of Thoothukudi was carved out as a separate district in the year 1986 as a result of bifurcation of  Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu State.
