History of  "THE HOLY TRINITY CHURCH" Tuticorin

This church was built in the seashore, just opposite to the OldPort, by the Dutch people in 1750, when they were ruling Tuticorin and its adjacent area.It was built for the use of Dutch people for worship.

In the top portion of the church, we can even today find the words:
ANNO - MDCCL
VOC

VOC is abbrevated as Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie -  which means "UNITED EAST INDIA COMPANY" (http://batavia.rug.ac.be/).

MDCCL means "1750" (M=1000 , D=500 , C=100,L=50)
ANNO indicates "from/in the year".

This church was taken over by the British in 1825 when they took over Tuticorin and was under their control till independence(1947).For maintanence of this church, until 1947, some funds were given by the British Government.
This church was being used by many many European citizens ,Anglo Indians working in Government and private companies in the earlier days.
Europeans working in Messers A&F Harvey Ltd., (todays Madura coats) were closely associated with the activities of the church.

Now this church is taken care by the St.Patricks church pastorate.Every Sunday , Monday and Thursday has English Service.

I would like to thank the pastors of St.Patricks church for their encouragement.Let me know if it needs any correction/updation.

Thanks Lennart Bes and Prabhu Rajadurai for correcting this page.

Church history is compiled from the Book:
